PPG loses World Trade Center glass bid to China
South Middleton Twp. plant would have produced ultra-clear "Starphire" for tower project
Friday, April 03, 2009 BY RICK SELTZER Of The Patriot-News
PPG Industries Inc. will not manufacture glass for the World Trade Center replacement in its South Middleton Twp. plant after the bid for the project was awarded to China's Beijing Glass. PPG, based in Pittsburgh, bid earlier this year to produce ultra-clear "Starphire" glass for the first 20 floors of 1 World Trade Center, the tower to be built at ground zero. Beijing Glass will manufacture the glass in China.
"This is going to be an iconic U.S. building that will have Chinese glass in it," said Jack Maurer, spokesman for PPG. "At the end of the day, this glass could be made in the United States."
